A Nude and a Window

When working with such soft and lovely window light it is honestly quite difficult to make a bad portrait. It is even more difficult when I’m working with one of my favorite people to photograph, Devon De Ville. She is one of those people that makes a photography session not even feel like work. We just hang out and talk, pausing every so often to trip the shutter on the camera, and then the conversation continues. Not at all a bad way to spend an evening and certainly not a bad way to expose a few rolls of film.

This image was made with the Hasselblad 500cm and Ilford HP5 film, which seems to be my standard combination as of late. I’ve been wanting to experiment with some new films as of late but it’s hard to step away from a tried and true film that I know so well and consistently get good results with.

This weekend I plan on getting outside and doing some outdoor work. So stay tuned for new images soon!

Window Light With The Hasselblad (part II)

I’ve been getting through a huge backlog lately of undeveloped film which feels really good. There are times when I enjoy the back-end process of photography (developing film, making prints, etc.) more than I do the actual act of exposing film. It feels like I’m putting the finishing touches on something I’ve put a lot of hours and effort into which brings a certain level of satisfaction and a sense of completion.

This is another image from my two sessions with Devi. Despite the fact that the shoots were pretty short they seem to be the kind of sessions that just get better and better the more rolls of film I develop. I think I have two more rolls as yet to be developed and I’m expecting good things.

Photographed with my Hasselblad 500c/m and Kodak Tmax 400 speed film. Despite the fact that the scene was a bit on the dark side I’m pleased with the tonal range which is largely due to the fact that I stand developed for 45 minutes at a ratio of 1:100. Stand development tends to be the way to go in tough lighting situations.

Nude In a Window

I still seem to be pulling some nice gems from the two sessions I’ve done with Devi this year. It’s really nice when I do a photoshoot and nearly every single roll contains and image I am completely thrilled with. Even better when I am thrilled with the image for very different reasons. It could be the lighting, the mood, the shapes, or even just the memory of a nice and relaxed photo session. It doesn’t really much matter.

This image was made with the Hasselblad 500c/m with Fomapan 100 speed film. The light coming in through the window was pretty dim as a big cloud cover had just blocked out the sun within minutes of loading film in the camera so I was down to a fairly slow 1/30th of a second hand held. Thankfully my hands are still steady enough, especially with a waist level finder.
