People have been making fun of my hat lately. I don’t mind. The hat feeds my childhood fantasy of one day being as cool as Indiana Jones. Now that I’m an adult I know I’ll never be anywhere near as cool as Indiana Jones but at least I can enjoy the hat when I go out on walks to make photographs around Portland.

Kodak Portra With Some Lens Flare
This past summer I was doing a lot of work with color negative film. Kodak Portra 400 speed film to be exact. On the day this photograph was made working with 400 speed film was probably not the best of ideas. It was hot, bright, and the sun was incredibly high in the sky as early as 9 o’clock in the morning. Pretty much all the conditions one doesn’t want when working with color negative film, especially high speed color negative film.

I swear I do this to myself every single year. I spend the summer making a whole lot of photographs outdoors including a few rolls of color film here and there, and then when winter hits I start developing that color film which instantly makes me long for the summer again. I mean it’s hard not to when looking at the absolutely glorious colors that analogue film is capable of capturing.
This image was made in the very early morning hours which as every photographer knows is probably one of the better times to do serious work. Even in the pacific northwest, a place not exactly known for brilliant sunny days, sunlight turns the shade of warm oranges and reds to the point where even the ice cold water has an inviting glow to it.

I’m not very good at making landscape photographs. I was I was better at them. I aspire to be better at them. For some reason I find the prospect of making a good landscape intimidating. More intimidating than photographing a naked woman. Go figure. My theory is that I was exposed to way too many photographs by Ansel Adams when I was growing up. It is hard to believe you will ever make anything nearly as good when that is all you look at between the age of twelve and seventeen. I don’t know. That is probably a rather dumb theory, but it is the best I’ve got.
These two photographs were made on the trail to Ramona Falls near Mount Hood about ninety minutes from Portland. I actually made these two images when I was hiking back to the car after already visiting the falls. All I had left with me was a roll of Kodak Portra 400 which had been floating around my bag for several months. I had been saving the roll for a shoot I have next month with a model that has bright green eyes, but I thought the scene looked incredibly nice I didn’t want to just pass it by without taking out my camera. I’m used to seeing Mount Hood in the distance from Portland proper, but being a bit closer while out and about was inspiring and I thought I would do my best to capture it.

I always like making photographs in the final hour of the day. I mean, what photographer doesn't love that moment when the timing is so perfect you can just click away with perfect light and enjoy all the wonderful colors cast every direction?
