I decided to be a little bit different this morning and brought a digital camera with me to a photo session. I’m really not sure why. I think I just wanted to mix up my life a little bit and do something different. It felt a little odd to photograph a scene with a digital camera and it feels even more odd to be posting an image I exposed less than two hours ago onto this blog. What a crazy modern age we are living in! Well ok, everyone else has been living in this modern age for quite some time.

The Oregon Garden
Late last week I took a trip down to Silverton Oregon with a friend to visit The Oregon Garden. I didn’t expect to take many photographs as we really just wanted to check out the beautiful gardens and landscaped pathways before it got too hot but I decided to take my Hasselblad along with me anyway and a few rolls of film. I’ve done a lot of photographs with this particular friend in the past and I knew she would be happy to pose for some images if we came across anything particular cool.
It’s a little tough to see on a computer monitor or a phone screen, but the flower plant that is at the center of this image is covered in caterpillars! There are probably at least twenty of them crawling along the stems and flower tops of the plant. We thought it was such a cool sight that we just had to take a picture. I love the way the image turned out and I plan on making an extra large print in the near future so one can see the details of all the little hairy caterpillars walking up and down the plant stock.

Several months back I went to the Oregon Dunes for a photoshoot and I’m not going to deny I’ve been dreaming of going back ever since. Usually it is the forests and the oceans that I tend to crave for the purposes of photography and I never thought I would find a desert to be so mystical and alluring.

I’m still down in California for another week but I had a little downtime today and figured I would write a really quick blog post. This image came to mind mainly because the landscapes I am walking through while on my trip are the polar opposite of what you see in this image.
I like California a lot, and in many ways still consider it my home, but after being here over a week I really miss the forest. There is nothing quite like leaving the place you live for a little while to make you truly appreciate it. I’m looking forward to coming back to Oregon and engaging in some photography sessions with some tall trees and thick mossy woods around.
This image was made in a rather thick forest which blocked out a lot of natural light. I had to push my roll of Ilford HP5 up to ISO 800 in order to keep an exposure in the range of being able to use my camera handheld. Thankfully I managed to keep contrast under control in development. If you look closely at the photograph you can see my own thumbprint on the model’s stomach which was my bad. I got a little handsy when rolling the film onto a spool in the development process. The thumb print is now on the negative and I’m not particularly inclined to photoshop it out.
The Isolated Shores
I really like it when I have the opportunity to make photographs in a location completely devoid of people. It happens so rarely, even when I go to great lengths to find locations far out of the way from main roads, cities , and towns. It’s part of the challenge when working in Oregon. The population here tends to appreciate the outdoors. Thankfully Oregonians tend not to mind nudity too much either.
