I was talking the other day about how much I love deep blacks in a photograph. Then strangely enough, the very next roll of film I develop has next to no deep blacks at all, just a lot of dark grays.

I made this image using a blank wall and one 500w hot light. I didn't even bother diffusing the light with an umbrella, preferring instead to just go with it and embrace the harsh shadows that were sure to extend to the wall behind my subject.

I rarely like to make thing complicated. I don't use make up artists or wardrobe specialists. Most of the time I don't even know what location I'm going to use until I get in the car and start heading toward it.

It's sort of odd what memories stick in the mind. I made this image several years ago and just about the only thing I remember is that my legs were well over ankle deep in mud at the time I was clicking away at the shutter.

Working with the 4x5 view camera for portraits is challenging to say the least. But when the focus is achieved exactly where you want it I really like the results. The amount of depth of tone and bokeh just blows me away.
