Windows and Libraries

Now is the time of year when I typically find myself retreating indoors. Sure, I will probably do a photo session here and there outside with a model or two who can brave the cold for a few minutes at a time, but by and large winter is a great time for me to catch up on undeveloped film and to take advantage of the nice soft window light that streams through every window on an overcast day in the pacific northwest.

I’m not going to deny I have a lot of film to catch up on. Hundreds of rolls. Maybe even approaching over one-thousand at this point. It’s rather ridiculous.

Oregon Dunes (second photograph...)

Here is another image photographed out in the Oregon Dunes near the southern coast of well…you guessed it…Oregon. The pose might be a little more bent toward “glamour” than I would normally go for but the scene looked so great in the moment I just had to photograph it this way. I am more than pleased with the resulting image and I’m particularly proud of the way I managed to hold on to a fair amount of detail in the shadows along the model’s figure despite the harsh quality of the lighting.

I have a lot more images to scan from this trip and and even more rolls of film that I have yet to develop. As usual, life can get in the way a bit which means the processing routine is slow going. Curses for having a regular job!!

Oregon Dunes

Yesterday I found myself on a mini-road trip out to the Oregon Dunes. I had never been there before but have been wanting to explore them for years. After yesterday I’m now asking myself why on earth I had waited so long. It’s a gorgeous area with rolling dunes of sand for what appears to be miles. In truth, it is actually just a small little patch on the Oregon coast, but when you are walking through it the feeling is nothing short of majestic.

The day was surprisingly warm and bright when we arrived at about ten in the morning. The sun was already very high in the sky and the lighting incredibly harsh, but the model who came with me was a trooper and I think we managed to get some wonderful images.

I’m not going to deny I’m feeling a little bit like a kid at Christmas playing around with my new Hasselblad 500c/m. I know, it is kind of silly to let a camera motivate me into getting things done with photography, but I can’t help it, this thing is just so fun to use and I’m really enjoying the early results. Such lovely sharpness and wonderful rendering of subtle details.

So far every roll of film I’ve exposed with the Hasselblad I’ve stand developed. This is in part because I’ve been running very low on Rodinal and my local camera shop has had more on order for a few weeks now. I just got a call today that they have more in stock so tomorrow I’ll be going out and buying a fresh bottle so I can do more traditional development.

Hasselblad 500c/m - First Serious Work

So of course after buying a brand new (to me) Hasselblad 500c/m I had to schedule a photoshoot immediately. Luckily I had been contacted by a wonderful model who was traveling through Portland by way of the Bay Area and we managed to figure out a good time to run through a few rolls of film on a Monday morning.

The day was incredibly overcast and my natural light was a bit limited. However, the house where she was staying had some decent sized windows that I was able to utilize. Even with 400 speed film my exposures were still down to about 1/15th of a second at f/2.8 and even a bit slower at f/4. As much as I tend to hate them I was was forced to use the tri-pod for most of the session. Thankfully, I now now that the mirror lockup on the Hasselblad body is incredibly easy to use!!
