Photo Sessions

It’s that time of year again when things feel like they are winding down to a close and I need to reset and get myself organized. That means buying a new day planner for the year 2020, labeling negative sleeves and archiving developed rolls into storage, and scanning the remaining frames that have been sitting on my desk for months that I never seemed to get around to.
As tedious as all that might sound believe it or not I enjoy it.

Working through some of my backlog of undeveloped film from back in the spring while I was down in California for a month or so. I was really glad when I discovered this park located about half way in-between Morgan Hill and San Jose. On a weekday it was largely empty even though the weather was nearly perfect. I suppose in California there are a lot of days when the weather is nearly perfect so it isn’t cause for celebration like it tends to be up here in the Pacific Northwest.

Another photograph made with my Minolta SRT-101 and Kodak Gold 35mm film. I’m really happy that I decided to shoot a little bit of color film during my last session with Devi. The colors turned out incredibly warm, which I can easily attribute to the fact that we made this image right as the sun was rising up over the horizon in the early morning hours.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I still believe that Kodak Gold is the best bang for your buck color film out there right now. I hope it sticks around for the foreseeable future. The color tones always tend to lean toward the warm side but I really don’t mind this at all. In fact, I rather like the look. It might not be totally realistic to the real life scene, but the look is nice.

I had another photoshoot with Devi last week and I decided for once to work with some color film. I was pretty excited to do some work with color for a change, especially in an indoor setting right as the warm colors of the fall sunrise were in full swing.

A little while back I found myself doing a photo shoot at the last minute and the only film I had on hand was a few rolls of Ilford Delta 3200. It was a very cold and rainy day so I was stuck doing the shoot in my tiny apartment and normally Delta 3200 would be one of the last films I would pick under these circumstances. However, I would rather make photographs with a less than ideal film than not make photographs at all so naturally I wasn’t going to back out of the session.
This particular frame was developed in Rodinal and anyone familiar with Rodinal knows that it is not the most ideal developer for high speed films. One of Rodinal’s attributes is larger than average grain so when you are developing a high speed film the grain is really going to be pronounced.
